New Amsterdam - Unaired Pilot

In December of 2007, an early/unfinished version of the pilot episode of New Amsterdam was leaked on the internet. While the major plot lines of the episode remain the same in the broadcast version that aired March 4th, 2008, there were several differences, including the following;

(OV=Original Version, BV=Broadcast Version)

OV opens with display of an old New York map and a voice over before immediately moving to scenes of John Amsterdam tangoing with a girlfriend (whom we later learn is named Rebecca). BV opens with a new montage of crimes scenes and a new voice over. The music used during the Tango scene in the BV is slightly different

The episode's main crime scene was refilmed for the BV and differs in many ways including; A different actress portrays the victim in the BV, John Amsterdam discerns the victim's income level based on the type of jeans she's wearing in the OV and on the type of perfume (with a reference to Sarah Bernhardt) she wears in the BV. Also, in the BV Eva Marquez is introduced during this scene, whereas in the OV she is not seen until after John's heart attack, at the police station.

When chasing Eddie Riley through the streets of New York, John Amsterdam commandeers a horse during this sequence in the OV, but this is cut from the BV as they head on foot straight for the subway.

The scene where John goes to Omar's bar to tell him of his heart attack was refilmed for the BV and is notably different. In the OV, John is noticeably disturbed by the event and has a glass of alcohol, ending his dry spell of 16,495 days. In the BV version, John is happy about the event and does not take that drink. Omar's commentary is, also, different. In the OV he makes a comment about John having once been depressed for 17 years where as in the BV this is changed to being crazy for 10. Omar is, also, more critical of John's search for "the one". In the BV version, John responds with "I know this is hard for you", possibly hinting towards the reveal in episode 2 of Omar being his son.

The scene at the police station where Eva Marquez is sitting at John's desk has been re-filmed. In the OV, this is the scene where she is introduced as a character. Since she was introduced earlier in the BV, the dialogue here has been modified accordingly.

In the OV, there is a car scene as John and Eva drive to the hospital where Eva talks to herself as John remains incommunicative. During the course of conversation John finally responds and rattles off a long list of schools he has attended including "Princeton, Syracuse, MIT, Louisiana School of Veterinary Medicine, the Sorbonne, Pfitzer(??) Academy of Performing Arts".

In the OV John passes Sara in the hallways of the hospital and exchange long glances at each other. This is omitted from the BV.

In the OV there is a scene of John and Eva in the car as they go to the Penmar night club. Eva mentions there is no record of it, even on the internet but John knows right where it is. In the BV, this scene is cut and they simply arrive at the club. Inside, when Eva says "She is the one" in reference to identifying the dead girl, the flashbacks for John are different.

The scene at the police station where John identifies the bracelet has been re-filmed for the BV and includes additional dialogue indicating John has had, in addition to 609 girlfriends, several wives, as well - but "only one at a time". There was no mention of any wives in the OV.

The scene where John talks with the victim's mother has been re-filmed to include Eva. The actress playing the mother is different, as is the location. In the BV, John reveals that he had a son who died at 6 years of age.

In the OV, there is a scene at the police station where Rebecca arrives asking John if he would like to have lunch together and wondering why he hadn't returned her calls. John breaks up with her and she ends the conversation saying "That first day at the fountain, the first time I saw you, I knew you were going to leave me." This scene is entirely omitted from the BV.

The lip reading scene outside the police station has been re-filmed for the BV. In the OV, John does not mention being deaf briefly while serving in Normandy and Robert Clohessy is visible during the entire scene.

The scene in the BV where John goes to the victim's wake and consoles her mother, revealing that he had a son who died at 6 years of age was not in the OV.

The CGI ending that takes us through a graphical representation of the changes to Times Square from 1642 to the present day is rougher in the OV and does not include certain images, including the bull's hide tipis.

other notes;

The scenes where John takes a photo of Times Square with his antique camera and views the photo timeline on his wall, the scenes where John works on the "antique" desk, and the flashbacks to 1642 appear at different points in time in the BV Compared to the OV.
