The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Nikolaj Coster-Waldau has been cast as the lead in a new Sci-Fi pilot for FOX.

"
"New Amsterdam" star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau is staying at Fox as the star of the network's two-hour sci-fi pilot "Virtuality."

"Virtuality," from UMS and BermanBraun, is set aboard Earth's first starship, which is equipped with advanced virtual reality modules. Coster-Waldau will play mission commander Frank Pike, a born leader.

Ron Moore and Michael Taylor penned the backdoor pilot, which is being directed by Peter Berg.

Coster-Waldau played the title character, immortal New York homicide detective John Amsterdam, on Fox's midseason series "New Amsterdam."

It has come to my attention that Nikolaj Coster-Waldau has been cast in a new FOX related project. With this news, comes the end of renewal efforts for New Amsterdam here at NA:F. It's unfortunate that we will not see any further adventures of John Amsterdam but it's time to move on and wish Nikolaj and the rest of the cast and crew all the best in their future efforts.

This site will remain and I'll continue to update it in the future with new content.

So, while my affection for New Amsterdam remains undeminished, I'd like to invite all of you to explore NA:F's new sister-site "The FRiNGE Element". This is a fan site devoted to the upcoming FOX TV series "FRiNGE". Just as with NA:F, it will provide info on the cast, each episode, sound score, photo/video galleries and more. A new forum is available, as well.

NEW AMSTERDAM RENEWAL CAMPAIGN - Contact Regency / FOX!

As we now know, the decision to cancel New Amsterdam was made May 10th, 2008 by FOX. While chances may not be great, there is a possibility that Regency Television can find another home for the show. However, time is in short supply as actors and crew will eventually find other work.

I continue to receive a lot of email from fans, asking what they can do to show their support for New Amsterdam. Many of us still think the "Vintage Postcard" campaign is the way to go. In case you are not aware, forum member "diedye" has suggested a simple yet effective way to attract the attention of TPTB. We are sending FOX vintage style postcards depicting scenes or other graphics which relate to the rich history of the city of New York, John Amsterdam's home for the last 366+ years. We are now expanding this effort to, also, include Regency Television Productions.

You can order Vintage New York Postcards from Amazon, find them at a local stationary store, or even create your own (be mindful of any copyrights)! If you can't easily find NY related postcards, send one featuring your own home town or even just a polite and short letter.

I think it would be worth the price of a stamp to let Regency know you support the show and would like to see more of it.

I have received word from David Manson, show runner and executive producer, this morning that confirms it. FOX has officially canceled the series as of yesterday. To quote from his email:

"Yes. Unfortunately, I received word yesterday that Fox has officially cancelled NA. I know this will be a disappointment to the many fans who campaigned so ardently for its renewal. I can only express my gratitude for their passion and hope that perhaps some other network will let John Amsterdam live.

I normally wouldn't quote an entire email outright but I feel this is a message for all of us, every loyal fan.

Also, while FOX has not picked up the series, there remains the possibility that Regency Television will shop the show to other networks and find it a new home. I'll update the site as new information becomes available.

The Spring 2008 New Amsterdam Ficathon is kicking off! In this "Ficathon" the moderator of the event comes up with a list of prompts, (i.e. song titles, words, scenario, could be anything), that each corresponds with a number. Everyone signs up for a number, not knowing what they're going to get, and then the moderator sends them the coordinating prompt. They then write a fan-fiction based on the specifications (and turn it in before a certain date.) Sign-ups end May 9, so if you'd like to participate: hurry, hurry, hurry! New Amsterdam Renewal - Status Update

I've just exchanged a couple of emails with the ever helpful David Manson, Executive Producer / Showrunner, about the status of New Amsterdam's renewal (or not).

At this point the jury is still out and, like I've mentioned previously in the forum, it appears that FOX will look at their new pilots to see what they have before making a decision about NA.

David points out that the ratings were only okay to marginal, amidst stiff competition, but the DVR and download numbers look pretty good.

Also, David does say "the fans should continue their campaign for renewal. I really believe it has an effect."

So, please keep sending those postcards and letters, and try to spread news of the renewal effort where ever you go. We, essentially, have less than 3 weeks to influence the decision before the traditional upfronts.

New Amsterdam ended it's season 1 run with episode 8 "love hurts" grabbing approximately 6.77 million viewers (#4) and 2.1/5 in the A18-49 demographic (#4) with a HouseHold rating of 4.6 according to fast affiliate ratings (Live plus Same Day). This is down slightly from last week but comparable to the ratings received by episode 6.

New Amsterdam experienced yet another ratings improvement this week, scoring it's best numbers since March 10th. Pulling in approximately 7.53 million viewers (#4), it gained nearly a million compared to last week's figures. In the A18-49 demographic it scored 2.3/ 6 (#4) and had a HouseHold rating of 4.9 according to fast affiliate ratings (Live plus Same Day)! This indicates and upward trend when compared with the 4.6 and 3.9 it received for the previous two episodes. The overall number of viewers was, also, an improvement over the episode of House that aired as the 8PM ET lead-in.

New Amsterdam experiences a small ratings rebound this week (Viewers: 6.63 million (#4); A18-49: 2.1/ 5 (#4)) with a HouseHold rating of 4.6 according to fast affiliate ratings (Live plus Same Day)! This compares favorably with the 3.9 it received last time out. While the numbers aren't great, it is growth in the right direction. If the show can stabilize and continue to build over the next 2 weeks then maybe we'll have something to look forward to next season.

Marc Berman, Senior Television Editor of MediaWeek, feels the show "has a 50/50 chance of coming back" for a second season.

Fox has released the official description for episode 8, the season finale of New Amsterdam, titled "Reclassified".

"Still recovering from his recent gunshot wound, John and Eva investigate what looks to be the drowning death of a young woman. The victim’s death may be related to a string of robberies of wealthy men linked to a dating service. While on the case, John has flashbacks of his life in the 1920s, when he was a grifter and stole a precious diamond pendant from his lover. John also questions if Sara is “the one” who will make him mortal, and as a result, begins to pull away from her. He doesn’t want to hurt her by being untruthful about his past and the quest to find his soulmate on the season finale episode of NEW AMSTERDAM, “Love Hurts,” airing Monday, April 14 (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. FOX Executive V.P. Says New Amsterdam Is Catching On

In a new article posted by The Hollywood Reporter, Preston Beckman, executive vp of strategic program planning at Fox talked about the current slate of shows on the network and had this to say about New Amsterdam;

"In the case of 'New Amsterdam,' we have evidence the show is catching on among viewers and we hope to see that translate into ratings."

FOX continues to show faith in the series and fans should continue to show their support. Please take part in our Season 2 "Vintage Postcard" campaign and join other fans in our forum as we discuss ways to let the network know we want more episodes.

New Amsterdam averaged 6.3 million viewers (#4), a 2.0/5 among adults 18-49 (#4) and a Household rating of 3.9/6 on March 24th according to fast affiliate ratings (Live plus Same Day). This is the first week that New Amsterdam has lost viewers from it's lead-in since moving to Mondays. Here's hoping next weeks ratings look better!

Even when achieving more than respectable ratings and garnering many positive reviews, genre shows often have a hard time surviving on mainstream television. Broadcast: House Replaces Canterbury's Law as Lead-in For New Amsterdam

If you've been following FOX's Monday night ratings over the last two weeks, you may be aware that Canterbury's Law was severely underperforming as a lead-in for New Amsterdam. I've been suggesting over the last several days that FOX should pull it in favor of House repeats. It seems someone inside FOX was of a similar opinion. On Monday, March 24th, House will air in the 8PM ET slot and likely serve as a lead-in to New Amsterdam for the next 3 weeks! Canterbury's Law has seen it's last Monday and is being quickly moved to Fridays at 9PM ET. I think this is very good news and positive step in helping New Amsterdam stabilize and grow it's fan base. I'll continue to report changes to the schedule, as needed.

Broadcast: Ratings For New Amsterdam Episode 4 "Honor"

New Amsterdam garnered 7.3 million viewers (#4), a 2.3/6 among adults 18-49 (#4) and a Household rating of 4.8 on March 17th according to fast affiliate ratings (Live plus Same Day). The episode gained 1.6+ million viewers compared to the 8:00PM ET lead in of Canterbury’s Law. Although overall figures have dropped, I think it's worth noting that New Amsterdam has grown it's audience coming out of the Canterbury's Law slot two weeks in a row. Perhaps New Amsterdam would be better served if it were paired up with a stronger lead in.

Airing in it's time period premiere, New Amsterdam garnered 8.78 million viewers (#3), a 2.5/6 among adults 18-49 (#3) and a Household rating of 6.1 on March 10th according to fast affiliate ratings (Live plus Same Day). It's worth noting that the show gained a million+ viewers compared to the 8:00PM ET premiere of Canterbury’s Law and held similar figures to it's 2nd half-hour ratings on March 6th when it aired after American Idol.

Exclusive Q&A With Yolonda Ross - Omar's Mother In New Amsterdam

Yolonda Ross made her feature film debut as the female lead in the critically acclaimed HBO feature "Stranger Inside". Her powerful performance earned her the 2001 IFP Gotham Award for Breakthrough Actor. Before and after, this multi-talented entertainer has graced numerous productions and branched out into theatre and singing. Most recently, she made a memorable appearance in New Amsterdam's 2nd episode, "Golden Boy", playing the role of Lily Rae Brown - a love interest for John Amsterdam (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) in the 1940's and mother to Omar (Stephen McKinley Henderson). Yolonda has frequented our site & forum in the past and was gracious enough to take a few moments from her busy schedule to answer some questions for fans of the show and her work.

John/NA:F: Let's start with the obligatory question of "How did you get your start in the business"?

Yolonda: I got started in acting after coming to NY from Nebraska. I had the opportunity to do some videos, one of them being the Beastie Boys "Fight For Your Right". From there, I realized how easy it was to fall into things in NY and had taken some acting classes, without much happening. I had been working in Fashion for a while as a Buyer. Eventually, while pursuing my music, things started to click for me with my acting. Music is a big key to me understanding the emotions of my characters. My first TV role was on "NY Undercover". I can also be seen on SNL in a lot of the sketches between '94-'96.

John/NA:F: Aside from appearing in numerous TV shows, I believe you recently made your on stage debut this past February in the play "Unconditional". Can you tell us a little about that and how it was for you, being live on stage compared to a recorded performance?

Yolonda: Last night was our last performance. It was amazing. I think we hit a new level of the show last night. You just wish you had one more chance to do it again. This was my first theater performance. I really enjoyed it. I'm used to film more than any of the other mediums. I pretty much feel for me personally it's somewhat the same as far as the acting process, BUT, there is that moment when you are in something and you realize, especially in quiet moments, that the audience is right there with you, that YOU are gripping them and holding them there for a moment, that you can never do again. With a movie or TV the viewer can always rewind and feel, or see that moment again. Also, the long rehearsal process with all the cast all day was different for me. It was almost like being in school.

John/NA:F: To add to your list of talents, you also seem to be an excellent singer judging by the songs being streamed on your MySpace page. Do you have or are you working on any recording projects available to the public?

Yolonda: Thanks for the comments on my music. At this time, I don't have a band. I had recently started working with a friend and her band, but then acting commitments came up. I had actually submitted one of my songs for "New Amsterdam". It was for the scene where we are in the Waldorf Astoria Hotel room. The way the scene played out was I was let into the room, and John was preparing the room for my arrival, champagne, music playing (which is what I submitted) and he was dancing a little to the music while I watched him without him knowing it. This whole opening to that scene was cut, unfortunately. They had me in a beautiful outfit! Not to mention how handsome he looked in his suit.

John/NA:F: Back to TV and your appearance in the new FOX series "New Amsterdam", can you tell me how you got a guest role and a little bit about the role you play?

Yolonda: I got the role of Lily by auditioning. It went just like any other job, but it did take an extended amount of time before getting that part. I had to be ok'd by FOX. I first auditioned for John Coles, the director, then David Manson, which was super sweet. I was very excited about the chance to play Lily. I had never done a period piece before, and the 40's is a great era to play in. Lily was a teacher. She and John know each other due to him being her father's lawyer. They started a relationship that her father knew nothing about. It was a very touching storyline and very interesting how they intergrated that subject into the cop part of the show. I think it was very well done.

John/NA:F: What was it like during your time on the set?

Yolonda: When I had joined the show it really was their first week of shooting. The pilot had already been done months before. So this was sort of the beginning of shooting the show. We shot this the second week in August in lower Manhattan and on the soundstage. Everyone was really cool. The days were really long, 'cause they were just figuring out their groove. It's not an easy thing shooting period stuff. And that's what this show is all about. John is all over in time, and that required the proper hair, proper way of speaking for the time, proper dress. A lot goes into each show.

John/NA:F: Is your role on NA a one time thing or do you think there's an opening for a return of some kind given your relationship to Omar and John should the series continue?

Yolonda: After shooting my segment of "New Amsterdam" and the chemistry we seemed to have on film, there was talk of me coming back into the show somewhere down the line. Also the fact that I'm Omar's mother was another factor. More could be learned about John and Lily's relationship. Omar could have the chance to find out more about his mother. As she died when he was young. I believe it was due to illness. Not sure though.

John/NA:F: Finally, where might fans see you performing next?

Yolonda: My next film is "CHOKE", with Sam Rockwell, and Angelica Houston. Not sure of the release date, probably the summer. Also, on DVD soon, the Bob Dylan movie "I'm Not There".

John/NA:F: Okay, I think that's it! I want to thank you for doing this. I really appreciate you taking the time out and I hope your appearance on "New Amsterdam" brings you a lot of positive feedback.

Fox has released the official description for episode 5 of New Amsterdam, titled "Keep The Change".

"John and Eva investigate the death of a homeless man whose best friend believes that his overdose was actually a homicide. They uncover a mysterious connection between the new homeless shelter and an expensive guitar the dead homeless man kept in his locker. Meanwhile, John remembers when he struggled with addictions and entered a 12-step program back in 1964 after passing out drunk one too many times and ending up in the psych ward on the “Keep The Change” episode of NEW AMSTERDAM airing Monday, March 24 (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. New Amsterdam's second episode "Golden Boy" came in 2nd in it's time slot, according to overnight ratings. While not as stellar a performance as it's initial outing, the show was up against Lost, an established fan favorite on ABC.

New Amsterdam hit the ground running last night! According to overnight ratings, the show ranked #1 in it's time slot, drawing in nearly 15 million viewers during it's peak ( 5 million more than the runner up ). It, also, came in #2 for the evening, partially thanks to it's American Idol lead in.
