Baggage of immortality haunts Fox's 'New Amsterdam'

TV characters seem to lug lots of personal baggage.

Still, few match John Amsterdam of Fox's "New Amsterdam" series. He has four centuries of baggage.

"It's a complicated life he has," says Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, who plays him.

Long and complicated. Back in 1642, he was given a spell that includes near-eternal life. As the series starts (Tuesday, March 4), he's great at being a police detective, not at being a happy person.

"He has these rich life experiences," Coster-Waldau says. "(But) he's not very good at being with other people."

In answer to a question in the "Spoiler Chat" section of Kristin's blog at E!Online , she gives another enthusiastic endorsement of the New Amsterdam and it's star, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau:

" Erin in Paramus, New Jersey: Is that show New Amsterdam ever going to air?

New Amsterdam actually airs next week, on Mar. 4. I have seen the first two episodes—and let's just say, he might be 400 years old, but Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (who plays John Amsterdam) may need to become a Future (Second) Husband. (BTW, you might remember Nikolaj from the movie Wimbledon.) Although the premise is a tad far-fetched, Amsterdam is still a pretty enjoyable hour of television, and the second hour has a pretty shocking reveal about John's family. I recommend it!"

FOX's Press Contact for New Amsterdam informs me that Nikolaj Coster-Waldau will be making appearances on Good Day LA and Good Day NY to coincide with the premiere of the series.

Nikolaj will appear on Good Day New York on March 4th and on Good Day Los Angeles on March 6th. If you don't live within the broadcast area, both shows appear to be offered via live streaming online.

FOX has altered the broadcast schedule for New Amsterdam Episodes 7 and 8. Previously, both episodes were scheduled to air on April 7th as a 2 hour season finale. Now, these episodes will air as follows:

• Episode 7 - April 07, 9PM ET
• Episode 8 - April 14, 9PM ET

It's been reported that New Amsterdam will be broadcast in Canada on Global TV . The series will premiere with the first two episodes airing March 4th at 8:00PM and March 5th at 9:00PM local time, respectively, before moving to it's normal slot on Mondays at 9:00PM.

FOX has published titles for the first 3 episodes of New Amsterdam, to air as follows:

• March 4th, 2008 (Tuesday) 9:00PM ET: Episode 1 "Pilot" - Series premiere, following American Idol
• March 6th, 2008 (Thursday) 9:00PM ET: Episode 2 "Golden Boy" - following American Idol
• March 10th, 2008 (Monday) 9:00PM ET: Episode 3 "Soldier's Heart" - The series falls into it's regular time slot, occupying the position previously held by The Sarah Conner Chronicles. It will remain here until it's 2-hour / 2 episode season finale on April 7th, 2008.

Note: It had previously been rumored at several sites around the Internet that "Soldier's Heart" was scheduled to air in the March 6th slot. This is apparently not the case.

Paul Goebel of TV Squad provides a brief review of the first two episodes of New Amsterdam . While his commentary on the pilot is decidedly mixed, he seems to think the second episode is much better and describes the series as a cross between Forever Knight and Law & Order.

A new preview has been added to the Video Library. This video is a collection of 7 preview clips taken from New Amsterdam Episode 1.

The clips are described by FOX as follows:

-Show open
-John meets Eva Marquez at crime scene
-John has heart attack on subway platform and is treated by Dr. Sara Dillane
-John discusses his immortality with Omar
-Eva finds John swimming nude
-John takes a photo of Times Square: Scans photos he’d taken of Times Square dating from 1878 to present
-John looks at surveillance photo of Dr. Sara Dillane on his computer. We hear Indian Shaman telling him he will not grow old, he will not die until he meets the one. Scene cuts to a process shot of New York, from teepees to 2007 Times Square

I've received word that, on February 3rd, FOX aired a trailer for New Amsterdam during the Super Bowl broadcast. This promo does not appear to be available online yet but I am in the process of tracking it down.

FOX has, once again, shuffled New Amsterdam in the schedule - this time placing the series in a more advantageous position. The new broadcast dates are as follows:

• March 4th, 2008 (Tuesday) 9:00PM ET: Series premiere, following American Idol
• March 6th, 2008 (Thursday) 9:00PM ET: Episode 2, following American Idol
• March 10th, 2008 (Monday) 9:00PM ET: The series falls into it's regular time slot, occupying the position previously held by The Sarah Conner Chronicles. It will remain here until it's 2-hour season finale on April 7th, 2008.

While it is a disappointment having to wait an additional 2 weeks for the series, I believe the current scheduling bodes well for the show's success.
